primary care pt clinical specialist
The petition to establish Primary Care as a recognized are of specialty and residency practice with approved during the 2025 House of Delegates in July. APTA/ABPTS has formed an initial 4-person specialty panel and Specialization Academy of Content Experts (SACE - exam item writers). The SACE training workshop will take place at CSM 2026. The first application for candidacy cycle for ABPTRFE Primary Care Residency programs open in November 2025. Exam item writing is estimated to occur Spring 2026 through April 2027. It is estimated that the first Primary Care certification examination could be offered within three years, estimating that the first application cycle could open Spring 2027 with the first exam administered Spring 2028. Given the unique scope of practice for a primary care specialist as defined in the Description of Specialty Practice, we may find that an additional year of item writing is needed, which would shift the launch back by one year. We will closely monitor progress and revisit this timeline at the close of 2026.
